Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur (IIT KGP) was the established in 1951. It was the first IIT to be set up in the country. Although today IITKGP has become the hub for technical education in India it was built on the ruins of old Hijli Detention Camp in Eastern India, where some of the country's great freedom fighters toiled and sacrificed their lives for India's independence. The institute started with just 10 academic departments. It was given the status of an autonomous university in 1956 when the parliament passed the act known as Indian Institute of Technology Act declaring the Institute as an Institute of national importance.
