The National Institute of Technology, Agartala popularly known as NIT Agartala or NITA was first founded as Tripura Engineering College in the year 1965. It was declared a National Institute of Technology in the year 2006. It is a technology-oriented institute of higher education established by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, Government of India. It has also been recognised as an Institute of National Importance by an act of the Parliament of India. The institute was ranked 92 among the engineering colleges in India by the National Institutional Ranking Framework(NIRF) 2018.
