The Assam Higher Secondary Education Council has decided to trim down of Class 11 and 12 syllabus by 30 percent. In a recent meeting of the Council's academic committee, the same was reportedly decided. This decision has been taken keeping the impact of COVID-19 pandemic in mind. The reduction of syllabus will, however, be a one time measure as it will be followed for the present academic session only.

According to sources, the AHSEC will soon issue a notification in this regard. The 30 percent reduction in the syllabus will be implemented for the students of Classes 11 as well as 12 in all the streams viz. Arts, Commerce and Science streams with certain conditions. Sources have also hinted that the formal notification for the reduction in the syllabus is likely to be released by 31st August 2020.

Earlier on 1st August 2020, Assam Education Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had said that the AHSEC as well as the Board of Secondary Education, popularly known as SEBA have been advised to either reduce the syllabus or supplement the question paper with a maximum number of options. As the academic activities were majorly affected owing to the COVID-19 lockdown, the minister said that this will ensure that the students do not face difficulty even if a portion of the syllabus does not get completed.

The state Education Department has also reportedly set up a task force which will decide on reopening of educational institutes. In all likelihood, the educational institutes will be opened in a phased manner. The Assam government is considering reopening of educational institutes from 1st September 2020, subject to the approval of the Central Government.
