cbseOn Wednesday, the Central Board of Secondary Education, announced the introduction of Applied Mathematics as an academic elective at the Senior Secondary level. The ‘Applied Mathematics’ subject can be opted by the students from the academic year 2020-21 onwards. In the notification released by the CBSE, it said that considering the use of Mathematics in various disciplines such as Commerce, Economics and Social Science, the Board has taken such a decision.

The existing syllabus of Mathematics aligns well with the courses in the Science stream but it is not the case when it comes Social Science, Economics and Commerce streams in University education, said the Board. As such, the Board will offer one or more elective courses in Mathematics with the aim that students are provided with relevant experience, the utility of which, is just not restricted to the Physical Sciences.

Students who wish to pursue Mathematics at the University level as an elective or take admission in Engineering or Mathematics (Honours) course may take up the Mathematics (041) at the Senior Secondary Level. While the Applied Mathematics (241) elective subject can be selected by students who wish to apply the skills of the subject to emerge out as successful in other fields of career.

Students who have passed only in Basic Mathematics or in Basic and Standard Mathematics both in the Secondary or Class 10 level can opt for Applied Mathematics at the Senior Secondary Level. Students will be provided with a detailed notification for opting this course at the time of registrations for Class 11.

Students must also note that who have earlier chosen Applied Mathematics as a Skill Elective will now be required to choose the subject as an academic elective for academic year 2020-21 during registrations for Class 12. Students will, thus, be required to follow the syllabus of Applied Mathematics as an elective subject. The subject will not be available as a Skill Elective from the academic year 2020-21.
