Coronavirus Highlights from 26th March: No Proof of Community Transmission in India yet, Cases rise to 649, says Health Ministry

Coronavirus Live Updates: On Thursday, the total number of positive cases for COVID-19 in India rose above 600 and death toll moved to double digit figures forcing authorities stepped up their efforts to curb the spread of Coronavirus. Today afternoon, FM Niramala Sitharaman also announced Economic Relief package worth Rs 1.7 lakh crore aimed at helping the poor and to ensure Food Security in the country. As India enters day 2 of the national lockdown, states have been instructed by the Central Government to stake stringent steps to ensure that lockdown is followed strictly. Globally, the death toll due to Coronavirus infections rose to 21000 with number of positive cases crossing 4.5 lakh mark. After Italy, Spain also crossed the Chian’s death toll mark with over 3600 reported death due to COVID-19.

    Repo Rate Reduced by 75 Basis Points to 4.4 percent

    RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das announced reduction in Repo Rate for of 75 basis points to to deal with the impact of deadly coronavirus outbbreak on the economy. In line with this,  the Reverse Repo Rate was also cut sharply by 90 basis points to 4% today.

    RBI Governor to Address Media Today

    As per reports, RBI Governor Shaktikanta Das will address a press conference at 10 AM today. According to financial experts, RBI Governor’s press conference will address various aspects related to liquidity and interest rates with regards to current situation due to COVID-19 epidemic. Das is expected to announce a cut interest rates today.

    6000 Prisoners in Punjab to be given Parole

    Punjab Jail Minister announced today that over 6000 Prisoners logged in jails across the state, who were sentenced to less than 7 years in prison, will be given parole. The decision has been taken by the state government to decongest the jails in the wake of COVID-19 pandemic.

    Shops providing essential commodities to remain open 24x7 in Maharashtra

    With reports of people facing problems in procuring daily necessities and essential commodities, Maharashtra State Home Minister said that there would be no time limit on shops providing these items. He also assured people and the online delivery outlets that their delivery boys will not face any difficulties in delivering essential commodities to the customers.

    CRPF personnel to donate 1-Day Salary

    Along with protecting India, CRPF has also stepped up when it comes to fight against Coronavirus. Media reports have confirmed that all CRPF personnel have decided to donate their 1-day Salary, which will total upto Rs 33 crore, to the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund as their contribution in fight against COVID-19 epidemic. In a statement issued by CRPF, the security agency said that “We are dutifully committed to stand firmly with our Nation in this challenging time of COVID-19 spread”

    Assam to setup Temporary Hospitals, Quarantine Facilities

    Reports suggest that Assam Government has stepped up its efforts in preparation to tackle the COVID-19 outbreak in the state. As part of this, the state government is planning to setup four temporary hospitals spread across the state to handle positive cases for Coronavirus infections. Apart from the hospitals, the state government is also creating an isolation facility for over 700 persons with separate rooms at Sarusajai Sports Complex, which will be ready within a week.

    Govt Approves Doorstep Delivery of Medicines / Drugs

    According to an ANI report, the Central Government has approved door-step delivery of essential medicines and drugs to ensure that people are not required to leave their houses for them during the lockdown. Report also says that the detailed notification to be published soon in the Gazette of India. Until now, medicines and drugs that fall under ‘H’ category and which cannot be purchased without a doctor’s prescription were not allowed to be delivered home. However, now such drugs will be delivered to the people but only after necessary prescription is provided in person or via email or other methods.

    No Evidence of Community Transmission in India

    Health Ministry officials in today evening’s press conference said that there has no evidence of community transmission of COVID-19 in India so far. According to health ministry, there have been only few cases wherein the source of the infection was found to be untraceable and when we are unable to trace any contact with an infected person or a foreign travel history for one or two cases out of 600 odd-cases, we can't call it community transmission.

The briefing was addressed by Lav Aggrawal, Joint Secretary, Health Ministry, who said that in the last 24 hours, there have been 42 Fresh Cases of Coronavirus infections along with 4 Deaths.

    17 States Working on Setting Up Dedicated Hospital for COVID-19

    Health Ministry in the press meet also informed that centre and state governments were co-ordinating their efforts to curb the spread of disease in the country. He said that 17 states across the country have started working on setting up dedicated hospitals for COVID-19 patients. These are expected to operational soon.

    Global Death Toll Crosses 21000, Cases near 5 Lakh Mark

    According to latest reports, the Global Death Toll due to COVID-19 infections is expected to cross 21000 and the number of infections or positive cases are reported to have risen to 4.71 lakh. The continued spike in the number of Coronavirus infections and the rising death numbers suggest that the measures announced by various government’s including all-India lockdown in India, has not been effective in slowing the pandemic.

    1000 Bed COVID-19 Hospital to come-up in Odisha

    As per an ANI report, Odisha government has signed a tripartite agreement with corporates and medical colleges to facilitate setting up of a 1000 Bed Hospital for COVID-19 cases in the state. The Hospital is expected to be functional in a fortnight and will be at the forefront of countering Coronavirus infection cases.

    IMF launches Govt Policy Tracker amid COVID-19 pandemic

    The IMF i.e. International Monetary Fund has launched a unique ‘policy tracker’ that will track and monitor the government initiatives and responses that have been launched by different countries to counter the Coronavirus pandemic. IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva said that the tracker will work as a collaborative tool using which governments can learn from each other’s experiences and better co-ordinate their efforts to fight COVID-19.

    PM Garib Anna Yojna for Food Security

    Addressing one of the primary concerns of poor families and daily wage earners, FM announced PM Garib Anna Yojna which will guarantee Food Security for all. Under the Yojna, every poor person will be eligible to get 5 kg grains per month for next three months for free. In addition to this, every poor household will be provided 1 kg of pulses for free. The new allocation of grains and pluses will be in addition to the current quota of  5 kg they get under NFSA.
